Most modern pads have some degree of waterproofing (and sealing of any porosity - apart from kangaroo pads). When badly done it is sticky; when well done it is not stick, and it is very successful. Space allow for more easy playing of bell low notes too. The mute looks nice with a cool shape, it's classy. There are mount and hole for mic/wire, and a hole to hold a lyre for reading music. So it doesn't matter how a model of saxophone is designed or what features it has if there is no consistency in the product. Yamaha uses a good design and consistently makes every sax to that specification. The YAS-23 is probably not the "best" student model sax. I like the silver plated version of the Yamaha 875EX soprano, however, still found the Yani 991 soprano to have a fuller richer sound and I've been a soprano player for over 30 years. I strongly believe Yanagisawa still leads the pack when it comes to sopranos. I’ve been looking into purchasing a new neck for my selmer series ii tenor. However, I know how odd the neck is on series ii’s compared to many other horns. (Many the octave key sticks way up on the body, so the receiver is much higher than most necks).
