Ok, so this pandemic thing finally gave me the time to finish out the CVA 45 cal percussion Kentucky Pistol kit I picked up a while ago. Intermediate cap size so it is good for both 10 and 11 nipples. A little hotter than CCI. Good all-around cap. I bought a box of RWS caps last fall, sold by Back Creek. N-SSA shooters use them. A friend, retired N-SSA shooter, uses the RWS wingless musket caps too.The special tap would probably cost less than $10 so, for about $11 + postage you could have the repair in your hand. If you do go with the Heli-Coil® method, several things need to be mentioned. The cross drilled flame channel that connects the nipple with the bore will intersect the Heli-Coil® at the bottom.You can find the bench design online or in Chris Schwarz's book "Workbenches". Look up "Roubo" bench online. The metal vises are from Woodcraft I believe. They cost about $90 at the time (10 years ago). The rotating jaws are very useful. The leg vises on the bench are very handy and have tremendous holding power.This is a matter of leverage so, moving the pivot point closer to the sear arm (usually moving it rearward towards the butt of the gun) or, bending the sear arm so it makes contact with the trigger blade is the only fix. I used 4 overshot cards in place of the nitro card. I found that when shooting with a nitro card I was getting a donut pattern, though the standard Skychief load still significantly reduced pattern size. Also, dont mind the artwork!127. To accommodate for the patching, the actual bullet diameter is under .458, and varies somewhat depending on bullet weight, etc. Bullet weights vary from 450-550 grains. I owned at one time a percussion rifle built for such bullets.Looking at their data, there is no doubt that shortening the barrel reduces the muzzle velocity . For instance, looking at the data for the 94 grain powder charge, the largest that was tested thru the entire 40 to 20 length barrel the velocity dropped from 2260 fps to 1976 fps. and.Soak a couple of cotton floor mop strands in a potassium nitrate solution (black powder will work). Clamp one in the cocked jaws of your flintlock cock, light the end of it, and open the frizzen to expose your priming powder. Pull the trigger. Full fiber cushion wad*. *The cushion wad needs to be SATURATED (the wetter and heavier, the better) with oil. I like to use olive oil. The load seems to shine best when used in cylinder bored guns. The tumbler needs room to rotate without friction from the lock plate and the bridal. Finger tight on your turn screw is all that is needed. I usually put a small amount of oil on the lock plate and bridal, and some oil on the sear screw.The Kibler kit is phenomenal. Jim and Katherine anticipated every need and designed the kit so it could be built on a kitchen table by someone with very few tools and skills. You have to work really hard to ruin one of these kits. Anyway, so I got the kit late Saturday and opened the box Sunday morning.Turn it with an electric drill, and run the emery up and down the barrel a couple of hundred times; that should remove a lot of the pits unless they are very deep. Change the emery often to keep it sharp. Finish up with very fine emery to polish.
